Human Hair Wigs Provide First-Class Fashion to Main Line Residents

Not far from Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, the affluent region of Main Line sprawls along the railroad line that was once thundered with the sound of steam locomotives down the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line tracks. Today, this area is still a center of transportation and commerce with Amtrak, SEPTA, and Norfolk Southern Railway lines running through the towns of Bryn Mawr, Gladwyne, Villanova, and others.

This area is also known as one of the wealthiest in the nation, with an average household income that surpasses that of Beverly Hills.Because of this, fashion is important and those that need special accessories such as wigs are seldom looking to just get by, but to look natural, attractive, and in-style at important functions and social events.

One of the best ways to achieve this is with a human-hair lace-front wig, which look like the real thing because it is the real thing, and which creates such a realistic-looking hairline that Hollywood studios use them for multi-million dollar films.

NaturalHair

One advantage to natural hair is that it doesn’t just look like human hair – it is! The best human hair wigs are made of natural hair that has been cut from a single donor, and which has the cuticles still intact and each hair lying naturally in the right direction, just like when it was cut. This type of hair (called Remy hair) may be treated or virgin (no chemical dyes or treatments prior to harvesting and only minimal treatment after). Virgin Remy hair is some of the most sought-after because of its soft, healthy strands and the beauty of the resulting wig.

However, even non-virgin Remy wigs or wigs made from hair from multiple donors can create an exceptional wig when properly treated and tied. Human hair of all kinds has an advantage over synthetic, in that it lasts longer and is more resistant to heat. You can generally style it with hot tools such as curling irons and straighteners, dye it, cut it – almost anything you can do with real hair.

human hair wigs

Lace Front

The most realistic-looking human hair wigs are lace front, which refers to the material used to create the base of the wig along the hairline. Lace front wigs are made of very fine, natural-colored lace that is almost invisible when the wig is applied. The hairs are hand-tied to this base – often one at a time – for a look that’s so realistic it can fool even at near distances when the wig is properly applied.

Because the hairline looks so natural, this type of wig also allows for the greatest flexibility in styling. You don’t have to be afraid to let your hairline show. Instead, you can choose a style based on your personal taste instead for a look that’s truly you.

Finding A Wig in Main Line

With all these advantages, you might think these wigs have to be special ordered or purchased at an exclusive 5th Avenue shop. But there’s no need to book a flight. Wigs for African-Americans

At Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, we’re proud to be part of the city that boasts the fourth-largest predominantly-black community in the country, just behind Brooklyn, Detroit, and South Side Chicago. African-Americans have contributed a tremendous amount to our city, including in the arenas of fashion and hair. That’s one reason why at Rosalind Stella’s we sell wigs that cater specifically to their unique needs.

What Is “Afro-Textured” Hair?

As anyone of African descent can tell you, Afro-American, or “Afro-textured” hair, is unlike any other type of hair. Instead of the each shaft being round (like Asian hair) or nearly round to oval (like Caucasian hair), it is a squashed elliptical, which causes it to grow in tight coils. Afro-textured hair looks and feels drier than other hair types and is often described as “wooly,” “kinky” or “nappy.”

Because of its unique texture, it has a look all its own and can be styled in ways other hair types cannot be, such as in the iconic afro. For this reason, many African-Americans do not just want a black wig – they need a wig that has been especially designed to mimic African hair. Hair that has been treated in this way is called “Yaki hair.”

Why Yaki Hair?

Yaki hair is non-African hair that has been treated to look and feel like the real thing. Why not just use genuine African-American hair? Well, for one, this type of hair is very fragile and prone to breakage. Preparing a natural-hair wig is a rigorous process that requires collecting, washing, combing, tying, heating, and often styling. Genuine African hair is ill-suited for the task. It is also less frequently donated and cannot be procured in as high of quantities which would make the resulting wigs very expensive.

Wigs for African-Americans | Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique

Instead, hair from other parts of the world (often from Asia) is treated, permed, colored, and styled in such a way as to be almost identical in appearance and feel as African hair. This kind of hair is termed Yaki hair, and may be created from the hair of a single donor (Remy hair) or multiple donors.

Types of Yaki Hair

Just as African hair can be styled and treated in a variety of ways for different looks, Yaki hair comes in four main variations. Silky or Straight Yaki resembles African hair that has been chemically relaxed and flat ironed. Regular Yaki retains the relaxed look, but is less shiny. Kinky Yaki resembles unrelaxed hair that has been blown straight. And Coarse Yaki is similar in feel and appearance to untreated, unstyled hair.

Regardless of your preference, we have a wig to suit your needs at Rosalind Stella’s. Our Yaki hair wigs are available in a wide variety of textures, colors, lengths, and styles, so you can look your best without sacrificing your personal taste.

We invite you to see for yourself by stopping in at our Bustleton Avenue location or by calling us at (215) 725-3930.

Wigs for Mexican Americans

Mexicans have been our national neighbors for centuries, but here in Philadelphia, we’re also proud to have many of them as our physical neighbors. In addition to the many wonderful cultural contributions they’ve given to our city, they have also brought heads full of dark, thick hair, which is the envy of many around town.

Hair is very important to many Mexicans, who enjoy styling it and coloring it in a variety of ways. That’s one reason why Rosalind Stella’s strives to carry not only hair pieces at mimic the traditional near-black locks that are characteristic of the culture, but also wigs in other popular colors and human-hair wigs that can withstand coloring and highlighting.

Mexican Hair Trends

Mexico is one of the top markets for hair colorants, where stand-out style is valued by many. There is no need to limit oneself to within a shade or two of one’s natural hair color there or among many Mexican-Americans here in Philadelphia. Instead, there is freedom to express oneself boldly, with colors such as bright red, burgundy, and blond. Highlights, especially blond highlights, are currently popular, especially among women from the northern part of the country.

In fact, Mexicans love their hair colors so much, the French company L’Oreal opened their highest-capacity hair color production plant in Mexico City at the end of 2012. Since both men and women are known for their thick, luxurious hair, it’s no wonder that they pay it so much attention, and even less wonder that losing their hair due to illness or age can be extremely stressful.

Restoring Style

At Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique , our goal is to help all our neighbors find a wig that not only restores their confidence and helps them feel beautiful following hair loss, but which also reflects their heritage and ethnic tastes. That’s one reason why we not only provide long, near-black wigs, but also short styles, blond styles, and even bright red, burgundy, or purple.

Wigs for Mexican Americans | Rosalind Stella's Wig Boutique

If we don’t have your exact shade, we also have options that are easy to dye, such as natural-hair wigs, which can take hair color and highlighting. If variety is your style, our budget-friendly synthetic wigs allow you to purchase several colors or styles throughout the year, so you never have to say no to a new look.

Whatever your taste, Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique is here to help you look your best without sacrificing your own unique “look.” Contact us today or drop by our Bustleton Avenue location.

We look forward to helping you find the right look for you!

Just a short drive away from Rosalind Stella’s, in South Philly, many of our Italian-American friends live in in one of the largest communities of its kind in the country. This area is home to the Italian Market, St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi (the first Italian Catholic parish in the US), and a large number of dark and fair-haired Italians.

Yes, dark and fair haired Italians!

Wigs for Italian-Americans | Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique

Although here at Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, we sell wigs suited to a number of the different ethnic groups that make up our city, we just smile when we hear someone talk about the “Italian look.” Although the people of Italy are associated with an olive complexion, dark eyes, and very dark, thick hair, the truth is that there have been a wide variety of “Italian looks” from the beginning.

As far back as ancient Rome, “Flavius,” which means “golden or yellow-haired” was a well-known name for the inhabitants of the Mediterranean peninsula. Emperor Nero was described by the historian Suetonius as having “light blond” hair and “blue” eyes. And even a number of the Roman gods were portrayed as fair-headed, including Apollo, Bacchus, Diana, Jupiter, Mercury, Minerva, and Venus.

Today, according to some estimates, nearly 15-20% of people from Northern and Central Italy are blond.

However, it is true that dark hair characterizes the majority of the population, especially in the south. According to some estimates, almost 98% of Southern Italians in certain regions (such as Sardinia), are brunettes. All shades of are found, but dark brown is stereotypical due to its prevalence. Curly hair a is common, although not exclusive, texture.

Finding The Right Wig

Wigs for Italian-Americans | Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique

If you’re Italian by birth, marriage, or adoption, congratulations! You’re part of a wonderful culture with beautiful hair (no matter what shade it might be). However finding the right wig will not be as easy for you as picking the “Italian” hair off the shelf. Because of the wide variety of hair colors and styles associated with your ethnicity, you need to consider what works best for you individually.

One of the best ways to start is by examining your current hair color and style. For the most natural look, we advise staying within 1-2 shades of your natural color. If you’re blond, that dark Southern Italian look may make you look pale and unhealthy. Likewise, if you’re naturally dark, blond hair may look unnatural next to your skin tone.

You should also consider how you generally style your hair. If you have curly hair, but straighten it daily, you may want to consider a straight wig, since the heat of a straightener can destroy some synthetic wigs and can shorten the life span of human-hair and heat-resistant synthetic hairpieces.

Another option is to purchase two wigs – one straight and one curly – since having a spare wig is highly recommended for those times when your primary hairpiece is being washed, dried, or repaired. This also allows you to change looks, just as you would with your natural hair.

Of course the best way to find the right wig is to multiple styles on personally. At Rosalind Stella’s, we carry blond and brunette, straight and curly wigs, for a hairstyle that looks as distinctly Italian as you do. Come visit us at our Bustleton Avenue location or contact us for more information.

If you’re an Irish-American in Philly, you know who you are! Having an Irish heritage is something to be proud of, and most Irish-Americans (a large population of which live right here in Philadelphia) cherish their heritage and pass it on with honor.

That’s one reason why Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique offers wigs in a wide variety of colors native to the Emerald Isle, including the popular “Irish redhead” shades. However, contrary to popular opinion, red is not the only – or even the most common – Irish hair color.

Wigs for Irish-Americans | Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique

Irish Hair Colors

Although outsiders often think of the Irish as pale red-heads, only around 10% of native Irish have ginger-colored locks. One reason why the myth of the Irish redhead persists is because, although the percentage is small, it is higher than any other place on earth except Scotland.

A much larger percentage of Irish (up to 35% by some estimates) carry the gene for red hair, but are brunettes. Red hair is a recessive gene, which cannot show itself in the presence of genes for dark hair. However, when two of these recessive genes are inherited by an Irish child, the low melanin count caused by a mutation in the melanocortin-1 receptor on chromosome 16 causes a sharp decrease in the amount of dark pigment produced, allowing the red color to show through.

Consequently, and contrary to popular stereotypes, dark brown hair is actually the most common hair color in Ireland, closely followed by medium brown. These dark-haired Irish are often called “Black Irish” by outsiders, although their hair is not truly black. When people come to Rosalind Stella’s wanting to choose a wig that shows off their Irish heritage, we can honestly show some confusion. After all – most of these customers are talking about wanting a red wig, while most ethnic Irish should be looking for a dark one!

Wigs for Irish-Americans | Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique

Finding the Right Wig

Because a person’s hair color is a large component of his ethnic “look” many Irish-Americans gravitate toward colors that reflect their heritage. This includes many shades of red as well as dark and medium brown. Finding the right wig is a matter of personal preference. However, we recommend that you first try on wigs that are within 1 to 2 shades of your natural hair color. This means that if you’re one of the naturally dark-haired Irish, you should be cautious about trying to go bright red. Likewise if you’re a redhead, you probably won’t want to try the “Black Irish” look, no matter what your family looks like. Hair color is closely tied to skin tone, and going too dark or too light can make your skin look washed out and unnatural.

However, the best way to tell the right color for you is to try on some wigs. Here at Rosalind Stella’s we carry wigs in both of these ethnic colors, for a perfect match that reflects both your individual personality and your group heritage.

Most of us know that when we look good, we feel better. Most of us have probably also spent hours before an important interview or first date making sure our hair looks perfect. From curling irons to flat irons, hair dye to hair extensions, gels to toupées, Americans spend a lot of time and money on their hair. But according to a study at Yale University, this may be due to more than vanity.

According to a study performed by Dr. Marianne LaFrance, Professor ofHair Extensions | Rosalind Stella's Wig Boutique Psychology and Woman’s and Gender Studies, a person’s hairstyle does significantly contribute to first impressions concerning his or her intelligence, confidence, beauty, affluence, and openness to new ideas. The study showed a surprising amount of consensus among both men and women regarding the correlation between hairstyle and perceived attribute.

According to LaFrance, if you want to be seen as…

Intelligent: Women should wear a casual, medium-length hairstyle, while men should stick with the tried-and-true side part and medium-length hair. The downside to these hairstyles, however, is that women who wear their hair this way can also be seen as careless, and the men as narrow-minded.

Confident: Short, highlighted hairstyles were seen as a mark of confidence in both men and women. However, men with this hairstyle were also seen as self-centered and the women as less sexy than their counterparts with longer hair.

Sexy: It may seem stereotypical, but it appears as if blondes really do have more fun. Long, straight, blonde hair was seen as the most appealing hairstyle on women, while short, highlighted styles were the most attractive on men. Interestingly enough, this male style is also the one perceived as being most confident, if a bit self-centered.

Wealthy: Long, straight, blonde hair, in addition to being attractive to the opposite sex, was also seen as a sign of wealth in women. The same medium-length side-parted style that indicates intelligence in men also corresponded to an increased perception of wealth. However, these hairstyles were seen as representing the most narrow-minded people as well – for both genders.

Open-minded:

Women with a casual, medium-length hairstyle and men with long hair were often seen as being the most good-natured, as opposed to their “narrow-minded” counterparts with long (for women) and  medium (for men) hair. However, it’s clear that this hairstyle can also be overdone, as both genders were targeted for being the most likely to be “careless.”

Hair Extensions | Rosalind Stella's Wig BoutiqueThe most important factor for any hairstyle, however, as made clear by another LaFrance study, as well as other independent research and common intuition, is whether it looks good on you. People who feel like they are having a “bad hair day” tend to be more socially insecure, more critical of themselves, and less confident about their performance, which can quickly counteract any first impressions people get from your hair.

The bottom line is: flatter your face and boost your confidence by choosing a hairstyle that not only projects the right image, but flatters your physical features, such as your facial shape and the color of your skin. When you look good, you feel good, which helps you to perform well and enjoy life more.

At Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, we understand the value of a great hairstyle! We’re committed to helping you find the perfect style, whether you want to look smart for a new interview or confident for a first date. Come visit us at our Philadelphia location or contact us today.

For thousands of years, people have worn wigs to celebrate special events and provide entertainment, from the Pharaohs of Egypt who donned elaborately curled and styled coiffures to Hollywood actors portraying fantasy characters in one-of-a-kind hair pieces.

Wigs are also an element in many hobbies that add fun and zest to the life of everyday people. Here are just a few of the ways in which you and your friends might enjoy donning a new look.

  1. Theater

Costume Wig Events | Rosalind Stella’s Wig BoutiqueFrom community theater to backyard skits, wigs are an important part of “selling the act.”  They can help actors alter their age, gender, or ethnicity; signal a change in time, place, or location; portray historical and famous people; indicate a lifestyle, personality, or occupation; and even create new species.

  1. Jidaigeki

Jidaigeki is a genre of Japanese period dramas, usually set in the Edo period (17th-19th centuries). Period hairstyles are almost always created with wigs, as only high-paid film and television actors are generally willing to grow their hair to the required length. One of the key conventions of this type of drama is disarranged hair for villains, which requires special hairpieces to create the effect.

  1. Cosplay

Short for “Costume Play,” cosplay is a type of role playing in which fans of certain film, television, or literature series dress their favorite characters. Anime and manga characters, comic book superheroes (and villains), video game personalities, and science fiction characters are among the most popular. These are often worn to special conventions, but there are also social media networks and websites centered around the art. Because cosplayers are usually very passionate about their characters, they often make highly accurate and detailed costumes, of which wigs are a vital element.

  1. Reenactments

In many parts of the United States, reenactments of historical periods and events are more than just a hobby – they are a way of life. Many reenactors spend months out of every year portraying characters from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, or pioneer periods. Their detailed costumes often involve a wig, which allows them to sell their character while still maintaining a current hairstyle in the off months.

  1. Holidays

Wigs are not just for Halloween! Whether you want to be a redhead for the Saint Patrick’s Day parade, want to dress up as Uncle Sam for the 4th of July, or look like a Christmas elf, wigs can lend authenticity to any kind of role-playing and take holiday fun to the next level.

  1. Themed Parties

Birthday parties, costume parties, proms, and homecoming events are just a few important events throughout the year where it’s common to set a theme – often from a different time, place, or event, such as a 50’s prom or a pirate party. For events like these, wigs are a great way to celebrate.

  1. Entertainment

Finally, who could forget some of the most popular reasons for wigs – pure entertainment. Clowns, magicians, and more make people laugh as much by their appearance as by their tricks. A wig not only helps sell the act – it also spreads the joy.

If you’re looking for a costume wig for any kind of event, we invite you to stop by our Philadelphia location on Bustleton Avenue or contact us today. Our friendly staff would be happy to help you find the perfect hairpiece for your needs – and would enjoy talking to you about your event.

5 Wig Accidents to Avoid

Wearing a wig isn’t difficult. When you combine a reputable boutique with knowledgeable staff and a skilled stylist who can customize your look, almost no one will be able to tell whether you’re wearing the best wig or having a great hair day.

There are, however, a few common mistakes that people who are new to wigs make that betray their secret. Whether you’re looking at a wig for the first time or would like to know why your friend’s hairpiece looks so much more natural than yours, here are a few tips to consider:

  1. Don’t buy the wrong size

One of the surest signs that a person is wearing a wig is when the wig slips out of place or bunches up in a way that natural hair does not. Although this is a common fear among new wig wearers, these events are generally signs of an ill-fitting wig – not a fault of the wig itself. Make sure you take your measurements accurately or ask your stylist or the Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique staff to help you.

  1. Avoid direct heat

You can ruin a synthetic wig by wearing it too close to intense heat. Avoid fireplaces, open oven doors and standing over boiling pots unless you purchase a heat-resistant wig and your boutique staff says its okay.

  1. Don’t go too bulky

Extra bulk near your crown is a sure sign of a wig, but can easily be prevented by making sure you buy a wig in the correct size and by taking it to a stylist who can thin it for a more natural look.

  1. Never have only one

Accidents happen and even well-maintained wigs need washed regularly and allowed to air-dry. Having a second wig can help you prevent a potentially embarrassing situation when guests come by unexpectedly while your primary wig is being washed, styled, or maintained.

For other great wig-wearing tips and advice, we invite you to stop by our Philadelphia location and talk to our experienced boutique staff. Whether you’re a first-time wig owner or an experienced veteran, we’re happy to help you.

If you’re being fitted for a wig for the first time, you may not be familiar with the process. But don’t fret – here are some important considerations for beginners.

For your initial consultation, scheduling an appointment is recommended, but it’s not necessarily a requirement. Your first consultation may take an hour at the most, so an appointment may be a good idea nevertheless. You should make sure you will have enough time to be fitted, learn about each of your options and ask as many questions as needed. Professional consultants are there to help you every step of the way and will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.

If you are expecting to undergo chemotherapy treatment, it’s recommended to visit the wig boutique before beginning treatment rather than after. Consultants prefer to see your hair before you start to lose it in order to match your real hair’s color and style as closely as possible. Chemo-induced hair loss generally begins within two to three weeks of your first treatment, so keep this time-frame in mind when scheduling your first appointment. Generally, a fitting takes between thirty and sixty minutes.

Wig | 215-725-3930 | Rosalind Stella’s Wig BoutiqueMany prefer to bring a “support person” with them to their appointment. This is acceptable; however, it’s better not to bring a large group of people, even if they are family members, as it can cause distractions during the process.

Insurance coverage for wigs – officially known as “cranial prostheses” – will vary depending on the insurance plan. If you have a prescription, you should bring it to the appointment, along with your insurance card, so the boutique can confirm whether or not you qualify for reimbursement.

The good news is that the comfort and natural appearances of wigs have greatly improved over time, especially in the last ten years. Innovations include machine-made, hand-knotted and monofilament wigs that are being improved and refined continuously. Hand-knotted and monofilament wigs are known as the lightest, most comfortable and natural-looking wigs available; they feature a “clear cap” design and are made entirely from synthetic fibers. They can also be customized in many ways in terms of color, cut and style.

You need not be undergoing [or expecting to undergo] chemotherapy treatment to be fitted for a customized wig. In addition to full wigs, we also offer partial hair pieces for those who experience hair-thinning or hair loss to any extent, whether for medical reasons or due to aging.

At Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, we are teaming up with Wig-A-Do and Wig Elegance to provide the most professional and top-notch wig services in the Philadelphia area; we also serve Center City and Main Line. We have now been in business for two and a half decades, and we have over seven decades of combined experience.

What Is Androgenic Alopecia?

After hair loss from medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, alopecia is the primary reason patrons visit Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique. However, they are often surprised to hear this. Most of our clients refer to alopecia by one of its more common names – hair loss or baldness. While there are many types of alopecia, one of the most common is androgenic alopecia, also called male pattern balding (MPB).

What Is MPB?

Male pattern balding is a natural aging process by which most men lose their hair. It begins with a receding hairline and ends with a wreath of hair surrounding a shiny crown and forehead. This process occurs when free testosterone in a man’s blood interacts with a chemical in the oil glands of the hair follicles to form dihydrotestosterone (DHT). A large majority of men have a genetic sensitivity to this chemical, which results in their hair follicles shrinking until they are too small to support hair growth.

How Common Is MPB?

Almost 85% of men experience hair loss due to MPB at some point in their lives. In rare cases, it can begin as early as the end of puberty. More often, it begins in a man’s 30s or 40s as a receding hairline near the temples. According to some statistics, approximately 85 million men in the United States have experienced hair loss.

Androgenic Alopecia

What Can Be Done?

Several hair replacement techniques have been developed to restore, mask, or prevent further hair loss. One method involves the use of medications, such as Rogaine® or Propecia®. Another surgically transplants existing hair to the top and front of the head. The third and most historically proven is the use of real hair wigs and toupees. While this method does not restore one’s own hair as the other methods do, it does provide an attractive and versatile way to reclaim a thick, youthful-looking head of hair without committing to a lifetime of drugs or a second mortgage for an expensive surgery.

At Rosalind Stella’s Wig Boutique, we know that no one option is perfect for everyone and that you may want to investigate many options before making a decision. If you think a chemotherapy wig or toupee or men’s wigs might be a hair replacement option for you, we invite you to visit our Philadelphia location.
