Things to Know before Fitted for a Wig

If you’re being fitted for a wig for the first time, you may not be familiar with the process. But don’t fret – here are some important considerations for beginners.

For your initial consultation, scheduling an appointment is recommended, but it’s not necessarily a requirement. Your first consultation may take an hour at the most, so an appointment may be a good idea nevertheless. You should make sure you will have enough time to be fitted, learn about each of your options and ask as many questions as needed. Professional consultants are there to help you every step of the way and will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.

If you are expecting to undergo chemotherapy treatment, it’s recommended to visit the wig boutique before beginning treatment rather than after. Consultants prefer to see your hair before you start to lose it in order to match your real hair’s color and style as closely as possible. Chemo-induced hair loss generally begins within two to three weeks of your first treatment, so keep this time-frame in mind when scheduling your first appointment. Generally, a fitting takes between thirty and sixty minutes.

Insurance coverage for wigs – officially known as “cranial prostheses” – will vary depending on the insurance plan. If you have a prescription, you should bring it to the appointment, along with your insurance card, so the boutique can confirm whether or not you qualify for reimbursement.

The good news is that the comfort and natural appearances of wigs have greatly improved over time, especially in the last ten years. Innovations include machine-made, hand-knotted and monofilament wigs that are being improved and refined continuously. Hand-knotted and monofilament wigs are known as the lightest, most comfortable and natural-looking wigs available; they feature a “clear cap” design and are made entirely from synthetic fibers. They can also be customized in many ways in terms of color, cut and style.
