Northeast Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Over the years, we have seen Northeast Philly grow in a burgeoning metropolis in its own right. With more than a million and a half residents it Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia is thought to have somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 of the residents. Of course, as it is not an actual city or township, there is no definitive or official way that the area is defined. Nonetheless, if you are from here, you know what we’re talking about when we talk about Northeast Philly.

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission actually divides the Northeast into two regions—Near Northeast and Far Northeast. Here, though, we call Near Northeast, Lower Northeast. This part of the city is a little different from the rest of Philadelphia. In fact, it is so different, the Northeast actually tried to secede back in the 80s.

A lot of people come into Northeast Filly to shop at the local mall, Franklin Mills. In fact, it is one of the “must see” locations for tourists in Pennsylvania. However, places like Castor Avenue toward the southern portion of the Northeast still boast a number of small, independently owned businesses where you can find anything from cultural cuisine to unique works of art.

More than 2,000 students attend the Holy Family University located in Northeast Philadelphia. When they get a break from their studies, those students, along with other residents and visitors will often make a trip out to the 1,600 acre Pennypack Creek. There are paths for biking and hiking there. Pennpack Creek is also home to the oldest stone arch bridge still in use anywhere in the U.S.

Those familiar with the Family Circus comic strip know of Bil Keane, the comic’s creator. He is from Northeast Philadelphia. So is former quarterback and NFL MVP Rich Gannon. Another resident from North Philly who has made national headlines is political commentator, Chris Matthew.
