Caring For Your Wig

Wigs are low-maintenance accessories that help you look great with a minimum amount of effort. They do however, have some special care needs that help prolong their life and beauty. While the exact way in which you care for your wig can vary according to its construction, here are some general tips that will help wigs of all types stay looking great longer.

  1. Only use wig products on wigs

Although some wigs are made from human hair, regular shampoo is not appropriate for either natural or synthetic wigs. Two types of wig shampoos have been specially formulated to meet the needs of either chemically-processed natural hair or synthetic hair, each designed to cleanse the unique materials in your wig while extending its life. Talk to your boutique or stylist about the best one for you.

  1. Do not over-wash your wig

Unlike natural hair that accumulates oils and dead skin cells from your scalp, wigs sit on an artificial base and only need to be washed after every 20-30 wearings. While keeping your wig clean is essential, over-washing it can decrease its life span.

  1. Do not wring or twist your wig

Remember that although your wig looks natural, it is not live hair. Wringing and twisting the hair fibers can damage them, reducing the life of your wig and giving you a less attractive hairstyle. Always pat your wig with a towel, then allow it to air-dry on a wig stand.

  1. Hydrate your hair

Natural hair is moisturized daily by the oils created in the scalp. Wigs do not have this luxury, so you need to hydrate it regularly with conditioner designed specifically to meet the needs of a prosthetic hairpiece.

  1. Remove your wig at night

Sleeping on your wig will shorten its lifespan and may flatten or misshape curls over time. Remove your wig at night and keep it on a wig stand to help it maintain its shape.

  1. Avoid intense heat

If you have a conventional synthetic wig, avoiding extreme temperatures, such as blasts of heat from an oven or applied heat from curling irons and flat irons, are a must. If you are regularly exposed to extreme temperatures or want to use hot styling implements on your hair, consider a heat-resistant or natural-hair wig. However, just as with real hair, heat can be stressful to the fibers. Whether you have a natural or synthetic wig, the less heat you use, the longer it will last.
