Philadelphia Monofilament Wigs

When searching for the perfect wig or hair piece to create your unique look, you may become overwhelmed. Mono top or lace front? Full wig or hair piece? Synthetic or human hair? And what’s the difference? The right wig for you will really depend on why you are getting a wig and how you want to wear your hair. Lace front, cloth bases and monofilament wigs are the most popular choices for wig cap construction. Monofilament wigs offer many advantages, including a natural look and comfortable fit.

It’s All in Cap Construction

Since monofilament refers to the materials that the wig is made from, let’s review basic wig construction. Hair fibers, either synthetic or natural human hair, are attached to a cap. The cap can be made out of nylon, lace, cloth, polyester or even a combination of several materials. You then apply the wig or cap to your scalp with clips, wig tape or special wig and skin adhesive.

Monofilament wigs are created using a sheer, sometimes mesh-like material such as nylon or polyester. These materials most closely resemble a natural scalp. The sheer material is breathable and lets your natural skin show through under the cap. The finer the mesh of the material, the more sheer and breathable the cap will be. This also creates a natural look, especially along the hairline.

Natural and Breathable

A monofilament wig is very lightweight. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like you are wearing a wig at all. Because of this, monofilament wigs are sometimes called “skin wigs,” mono tops or skin tops. Wigs classified as monofilament wigs usually combine a mono top with an open cap at the sides and nape. This creates ventilation and keeps your scalp temperatures comfortable.

With monofilament wigs, hair fibers are usually hand-sewn or hand-tied into the base of the wig (although some manufacturers use machines to sew in groups of hair fibers). This process adds to creating a more natural look. With this fine mesh material as the cap base with hand-sewn fibers, you can literally part your hair anywhere. This unique wig versatility is often called multidirectional styling.

While great for a natural look, monofilament wigs are considered the best option for those who have lost some or all of their hair. They are also ideal for those with sensitive skin or those who have undergone chemotherapy or other medical treatments. The sheer material of the cap plus the tied-in hair fibers make the wigs virtually undetectable, while the thin, breathable base material is less irritating to the scalp than a more traditional cloth-based wig and allows for more air circulation.
