Chemically Damaged Hair

Hair dye and styling treatments are a common way to achieve a more fashionable or desirable hairstyle. However, hair dyes and treatments contain chemicals that can damage your hair causing it to break, thin, and even fall out, especially with prolonged use.

If you have damaged hair, it’s necessary to stop dyeing and styling the hair giving it time to heal. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have stylish hair while it heals. Wigs are a great solution for sporting stunning hairstyles while protecting your damaged hair underneath.

Causes of Chemically Damaged Hair

Hair can be chemically damaged by perms, chemical hair dyes, hair bleaching, and straightening treatments. Using hot styling tools on treated hair can make the damage even worse. Here are some of the chemicals in hair products and treatments that can cause damage:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Methylene Glycol
  • Parabens
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
  • Ammonia
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Sodium Chloride

What do these chemicals do? They damage the hair cuticle, the protective outer layer of the hair. This exposes the hair cortex to damage and can even cause hair follicle damage which leads to hair loss.

Signs of chemically damaged hair include:

  • Dry, brittle hair
  • Hair shedding
  • Itchy scalp
  • Split ends
  • Dull hair
  • Bald patches
  • Hair loss

Repairing Damaged Hair

  • Use chemical-free products. Instead opt for products with amino acids, vitamins, and minerals essential for restoring hair.
  • After washing, rinse your hair with cold water to tighten cuticles and pores and keep your scalp from drying out.
  • Once a week, use a hair mask to infuse your hair with moisture and hydration.
  • Do not use heat styling tools or tight hairstyles while your hair is healing.
  • Visit your hairstylist. They can trim off dead ends and recommend products to restore healthy hair. With severely damaged hair, it is possible they will need to cut off all the damaged hair to allow for new healthy hair growth.

Wigs

It takes a while for healthy hair to grow back to its natural fullness and luster. During that time, wearing a wig is an excellent solution for protecting your hair as it regrows while maintaining a stunning hairstyle.

You still need to care for your natural hair, but wigs can give it the rest and protection it needs for healthy regrowth.

Not only do wigs protect your natural hair as it regrows, but they also offer added benefits like:

  • The ability to switch up your hairstyle and color whenever you want
  • Low-maintenance styling
  • Always having a good hair day
  • Keeping your hair loss private

If you choose to wear a wig while your natural hair regrows, be sure to keep your hair clean and moisturized underneath the wig and to properly wash and care for your wig.
