Wigs for Traction Alopecia

Wigs for Traction Alopecia

We all have stray hairs that fall out throughout the day, gather in the shower drain and hang out in the hair brush long after we’ve styled our manes. But have you ever had clumps of hair fall out, or notice bald patches where you used to have thick and flowing hair? Loosing hair due to repeated styling and pulling could be traction alopecia. Continue reading for more details and to help combat the ailment. Wigs for traction alopecia can help hide the thinning or bald patches as you work to reverse the effects.

What is Traction Alopecia?

Traction alopecia is hair loss due to constant pulling of the hair. Unlike other forms of alopecia, traction alopecia is not an autoimmune disease and is not permanent. People who experience traction alopecia often report wearing their hair in ponytails or tight braids a lot. The traction and pulling action of wearing your hair tightly away from your face can cause traction alopecia in some people.

Wearing hair extensions, especially incorrect placement and adhesion, can also cause traction alopecia. The corn rows that some extensions are attached to or using products not specifically designed for extensions and adhesion to the scalp can also increase traction alopecia. This is not the same as hair breaking off due to quick tension. The constant tension actually causes hair to be pulled out of the scalp by the roots or inflames the hair follicle. An inflamed hair follicle can become damaged and if it is not corrected, the hair follicle may no longer produce a hair.

How to Handle Traction Alopecia

People start to notice traction alopecia when their part looks wider and sparser than it used to, or hair around their temples and behind their ears starts to thin. The good news is that traction alopecia is not usually permanent. It can, however, leave bald patches and uneven growth and parts in your hair. Once you’ve identified and worked to remedy the long term problem, you may want a hair piece to conceal the missing hair.

Human and Synthetic Hair Wigs for Traction Alopecia

Wigs for traction alopecia can be made from human hair or synthetic hair. Human hair is very natural looking and can blend into your remaining hair quite well. It can be custom dyed, cut and styled. A goof human hair wig can also last up to a year, if cared for properly.

Synthetic wigs come in a wide range of styles, colors and textures. Many high quality synthetic wigs do look like real hair. Synthetic wigs require less day to day maintenance and can be worn right out of the package. They do not last as long as human hair wigs, typically 4-6 months with heavy wear, but they are more cost effective.

To cover traction alopecia around your hairline, you may want to consider a lace front monofilament wig. The lace blends into your skin and virtually hides the hairline of the wig, sometimes even with baby hairs. Monofilament refers to the material that the wig base is made from. It is a light and breathable, making it ideal for scalps sensitive to touch or temperature.
